Posted by: Frank Ableson in Linux Magazine, Software Development, Technology, Android, Blackberry, iPhone on July 28, 2010

The mobile application experience is changing the way we think about, value and purchase software.  The days of bloatware are slipping and being replaced with more collaborative software experiences.  Read more in this week's Upward Mobility column @ Linux Magazine.

Antenna got you and your iPhone 4 down?

Posted by: Frank Ableson in Fun, Linux Magazine, Technology, iPhone on June 29, 2010

In this week's Upward Mobility column I address some possible solutions to the problems Mr. Jobs and company are experiencing with the latest iPhone.  It really is a shame because on paper, the device rocks.  Let's hope they bounce back and sort out these problems.

A course in reverse engineering

Posted by: Frank Ableson in Fun, Linux Magazine, Software Development, Technology, Android, iPhone on May 05, 2010

The team working on the porting of Android to Apple's iPhone and iPad hardware continue to make progress.  For example, they are working on reverse engineering the audio baseband chipset -- not just the chip -- but how it is used within the Apple hardware.  Pretty fascinating to watch them pull on a thread and see where it goes.  You can read more about it on the Linux on the iPhone blog.

For some more background, you can read my latest contribution to Linux Magazine.

Android and iPad—a good match?

Posted by: Frank Ableson in Linux Magazine, Software Development, Technology, Android, iPhone on May 04, 2010

Open source developers have ported Android to the iPhone!  The Apple iPad has sold over 1 million units in its first month -- challenging the record set by the iPhone.  Could the iPad run Android?  Would it be better than a true Android tablet?  Here is some background over @ Linux Magazine.

Apple iPhone version 4.0—looks good on the outside…

Posted by: Frank Ableson in General Business, Linux Magazine, Technology, Android, iPhone on April 19, 2010

Apple recently announced iPhone OS version 4.0.  The features look tremendous -- multi-tasking services (not ideal, but MUCH better then previous releases), enterprise features and even some cool gaming capabilities.  However, the licensing agreement holds some evil for both developers and third party marketing companies who track application usage.  In short, Apple is saying, "our way or the highway".  What will developers do?  Probably shrug and move on if they are making money.  Palm is struggling with WebOS to gain traction and Android will continue to grow -- but the money is still in Cupertino.  And that is where developers will hang.

The iPad isn’t Kosher?

Posted by: Frank Ableson in Software Development, Technology, iPhone on April 17, 2010

Israeli authorities are confiscating iPads -- preventing them from entering the country via the airport.  The claimed reason is that the WiFi is not compatible with the WiFi networks in use within Israel -- and potentially other international locations.

Boy, would that stink -- buy an iPad, cozy up for a long flight to watch a movie, write a book, etc.  And then, when you land, hand it over.  It is not clear how the actual property ownership issue is being dealt with -- presumably passengers can retrieve their devices on their way back OUT of the country -- along with other Kosher duty-free items?  Learn more here.
