Some Lemonade after picking some Lemons
Posted by: Frank Ableson in C12, General Business on December 03, 2009
I just came across a story about Luther Wright, former Seton Hall and Utah Jazz basketball player. I practiced one spring AAU season with Luther and played against him once during college. Seton Hall beat Cornell by 16 points at the meadowlands in 1993. It was actually a pretty good game, despite the scoreboard as I recall. Another player from that Seton Hall team as on my AAU team during high school: Terry Dehere. Terry was a fantastic college player winning many accolades as a collegiate, and then spent a number of years playing in the NBA.
Luther hit some *very* low marks -- lower than many will ever see. It appears that he is picking up the pieces and by God's grace moving forward. It is a sad, but good read.
Thanks in the Marketplace

This past Tuesday, November 17th, I had the privilege to join other business owners at an event in Ambler, PA called "Thanks in the Marketplace". It was a time for us to gather and share what the Lord has done in our businesses over the past year. Approximately 30 men and women were in attendance. We also heard an inspiring presentation by Tim Wampler from Shoes2Share International. Shoes2Share is a missional organization that gathers new and "like new" shoes and distributes them to needy children around the world.
Customizing BlackBerry Applications

This week's Upwardly Mobile column at Linux Magazine demonstrates a simple, yet powerful technique of extending the built-in BlackBerry applications with custom menus. We use this technique for some of our client's applications with success.
BlackBerry is perhaps not the most glamourous device, but it is the choice of long-time mobile "power users". Virtually everyone in my C12 group carries a BlackBerry, though there is at least one confirmed iPhone sighting -- but that is excusable as that fellow's company actually does some work with iPhone related hardware.
iPhone, Android, BlackBerry -- all viable and growing platforms. Palm... that is another story. They just launched the Pixi. Hopefully it proves magical for them to win the right to proceed to the next product. Time will tell -- most likely the Christmas shopping season this year.
Thinking and Doing

Today I have a C12 meeting in PA. Our "working on my business" topic is Balancing Strategy and Execution. This is an area I have been giving a fair amount of thought of late as we are doing just that - trying to make sure that we are headed in the right direction as a business, and getting done what we said we would do.
Running a business is kind of like sales in a way. There is a lot of energy and excitement when planning (selling) and then when the plan is "approved" (closing the deal), the work begins (delivery). As a CEO, my job (I am learning) is to keep everyone, including myself, focused on their tasks - on a daily, weekly, monthly, etc. basis. Part of that task list is to measure progress against our plan on a regular basis.
